Our Programs
At De Gullah SHIPP, our programs honor Gullah heritage while nurturing families, children, and community. Each initiative is rooted in love, education, and togetherness—reflecting the traditions of our ancestors while preparing the next generation for a strong and healthy future. From welcoming new life, to empowering parents, to giving children hands-on experiences with culture and nature, our programs celebrate the whole family and the richness of Gullah life.

Coastal Kids
Coastal Kids brings children into the heart of Gullah land and culture through hands-on, interactive experiences. These educational field trips immerse kids in the beauty of the islands, teaching them to appreciate both heritage and environment. Highlights include:
-
Kids Kingdom – A summer camp at De Moors on Spring Island, filled with learning, play, and exploration.
-
Dupont Plantation Tours – Guided visits for community members to learn Gullah history and legacy.
-
Arts at the Farm & Treasures in Our Community – Creative workshops and cultural explorations at Morning Glory Farm on St. Helena Island.
-
Sunrise at the Beach – A joyful family scavenger hunt followed by breakfast by the sea.
-
Environmental Protection Agency Experience – Hands-on learning with Dr. Ibrahim Goodwin, where kids test waters and gain an understanding of protecting coastal ecosystems.
Through Coastal Kids, children deepen their connection to land, culture, and community while having fun in nature.
Whole Family Community Baby Shower
The Whole Family Community Baby Shower is a village coming together to welcome new life. Families receive essentials such as diapers, clothing, strollers, and other baby items, all provided free of charge. But the heart of the event goes beyond gifts: games and activities foster family closeness, while fathers are honored and celebrated as vital participants. Families also learn from local yoga teachers, doulas, and educators who lead sessions on maternal mental health, child development, and whole-family wellness. This program embodies the Gullah tradition of community care, ensuring every child and parent begins their journey with love and support.

Parenting Initiative (Upcoming)
The Parent Education Initiative equips mothers, fathers, and caregivers with the tools to be their child’s first and best teachers. Through a 24-class series, families explore child development milestones, positive parenting practices, and strategies to create nurturing home environments. Each class is 1.5 hours, tailored to specific age groups—beginning with infancy through toddlerhood. With a focus on small group settings (10 families per phase), parents receive personalized support, building confidence and community along the way. This program strengthens the foundation of families, ensuring children grow with love, structure, and cultural pride.
Cherishing Our Elders: Honoring Gullah History
In partnership with the University of Georgia, this panel uplifted the voices of elders, community leaders, and cultural historians who carry the living memory of the Gullah people. The gathering honored ancestors, celebrated the wisdom of elders, and created space for intergenerational dialogue. Through storytelling, reflection, and education, participants explored the resilience of Gullah culture and the importance of preserving its legacy for future generations. This program embodies reverence for history while inspiring today’s families to remain rooted in their heritage.
